I used to feel guilty about spending morning hours working on a book; about fleeing to the brook in the afternoon. It took several summers of being totally frazzled by September to make me realize that this was a false guilt. I'm much more use to family and friends when I'm not physically and spiritually depleted than when I spend my energies as though they were unlimited. They are not. The time at the typewriter and the time at the brook refresh me and put me into a more workable perspective.
Madeleine L'EngleFriends--or lovers--are not always available to each other. Inner turmoils can cause us to be unhearing when someone needs us, to need to receive understanding when we should be giving understanding.
Madeleine L'EngleLike it or not, we either add to the darkness of indifference and out-and-out evil which surrounds us or we light a candle to see by.
Madeleine L'EngleWe turn to stories and pictures and music because they show us who and what and why we are.
Madeleine L'EngleNo long-term marriage is made easily, and there have been times when I've been so angry or so hurt that I thought my love would never recover.
Madeleine L'EngleLove of music, of sunsets and sea; a liking for the same kind of people; political opinions that are not radically divergent; a similar stance as we look at the stars and think of the marvelous strangeness of the universe - these are what build a marriage. And it is never to be taken for granted.
