You are a sick, sick man,โ I told him. โThank you,โ Ben replied, looking modest.
Patricia BriggsI was too busy fighting the river to worry about adjusting my beliefs in accordance to reality.
Patricia BriggsI liked Lost in Space,โ Stefan said. โThe movie or the TV series?โ โThe movie? Right. I had forgotten about the movie,โ he said soberly. โIt was better that way.
Patricia BriggsSee you tomorrow,โ he said, instead. โAll right.โ Then, impulsively, I asked, โDo you have a place to sleep tonight?โ โSure,โ he said with a smile, and started off as if he had somewhere to be. I could have bitten off my tongue because I pushed him into a lie. Once he started lying to me, it would be harder to get him to trust me with the truth. I donโt know why it works that way, but it doesโat least in my experience.
Patricia BriggsHe stepped back with exaggerated courtesy. But when I walked past him, he swatted my rump. Hard enough to sting. โYou need to be more careful,โ he growled. โKeep interfering in my business and you might get hurt.โ I said sweetly as I continued to Jesse's room, โThe last man who swatted me like that is rotting in his grave.โ โI have no doubt about it.โ His voice was more satisfied then contrite.
