Nothing is quite beautiful alone; nothing but is beautiful in the whole. A single object is only so far beautiful as it suggests this universal grace.

Extremes meet, and there is no better example than the naughtiness of humility.

The right eloquence needs no bell to call the people together, and no constable to keep them.

The cardinal virtue of a teacher [is] to protect the pupil from his own influence.

And last of all, high over thought, in the world of morals, Fate appears as vindicator, levelling the high, lifting the low, requiring justice in man, and always striking soon or late when justice is not done. What is useful will last, what is hurtful will sink.

Had I but written as many odes in praise of Muhammad and Ali as I have composed for King Mahmud, they would have showered a hundred blessings on me.

Words are also actions, and actions are a kind of words.
