Don't think. Thinking is the enemy of creativity. It's self-conscious, and anything self-conscious is lousy. You can't try to do things. You simply must do things.

They may like Henry James, but what if you donโt want to write like Henry James? They may like John Irving, for instance, whoโs the bore of all time. A lot of the people whose work theyโve taught in the schools for the last thirty years, I canโt understand why people read them and why they are taught.
