What we need is to use what we have.

A thing is a thing, not what is said of that thing.

This is the beauty that emerges from self-confidence, class confidence. That says, I am not born to please. I am born to be pleased.

The two ideas are antithetical. Insofar as photography is (or should be) about the world, the photographer counts for little, but insofar as it is the instrument of intrepid, questioning subjectivity, the photographer is all.

I don't write because there's an audience. I write because there is literature.

The work of art itself is . . . a vibrant, magical, and exemplary object which returns us to the world in some way more open and enriched.

By furnishing this already crowded world with a duplicate one of images, photography makes us feel that the world is more available than it really is.
