When there is conflict between what God requires and the demands of the government, each of us has an important decision to make concerning taxes.

I do not mean that others represent Jesus for us. I mean that Jesus actually is present in each other person

The Bible makes clear a basic truth that we self-centered humans find difficult to accept, namely, that the natural universe was not created primarily for us. There is no doubt that God wants us to enjoy it and even use its resources to optimize a good life for ourselves. But the ultimate purpose of creation is worship. Nature and all living things were created to glorify God.

Freud taught us that it wasn't God that imposed judgment on us and made us feel guilty when we stepped out of line. Instead, it was the superego - that idealized concept of what a good person is supposed to be and do - given to us by our parents, that condemned us for what had been hitherto regarded as ungodly behavior.

One of the problems with evangelicalism is that it has allowed itself to be married to the Republican party... Jesus is not a Republican. Nor is he a Democrat.

I applaud the growing commitment of Evangelicals to the needs of the poor and oppressed in urban America.

The real problem that I think those of us who are evangelicals and Democrats have to face up to is that the political right controls the religious media.
