God chooses community sometimes to bear an unfair burden to force us to rise to the next level of consciousness and understanding.

I had this radical idea that the police should obey the law. My view was that any human system without adequate checks and balances will tend towards corruption and abuse. That's why you have meat inspectors. Not because you hate butchers, but because of an understanding of human nature.

I do feel kind of like I have a split identity in that there's Van Jones, who has this big public role and tries to inspire millions of people to do new stuff together. And then there's just me: a pretty quiet, shy, retiring person.

And that kind of elitism, which is first of all not true, is also not fair. It's also dumb strategy.
