I've been writing music since I was about eight. I would write sporadically. I wrote a lot of music in high school. I guess the oldest song on the record ("I Thought I Saw Your Face") is about eight years old. It's the old "I had my whole life to write my first album and six months to write the second one." I did, to some degree, but actually, a lot of the songs that ended up on the record, I wrote really recently. So it varies.

I grew up believing my sister was from the planet Neptune and had been sent down to Earth to kill me.

I always have loved music, ever since I was really little. I just loved to sing. I can't really explain it, except maybe - and this is going to sound really stupid - when I would listen to a song it would make me more excited than anything else could.

There are lots of things that everyone else likes that I hate. So I feel that audience rights are very important. I just want people to hear it and decide if they like it or don't like it as they would with anything else.

I played a lot of sarcastic, wisecracking characters for a long time, and people would think that was me. And it's very much not me, and then people would think I was being sarcastic when I wasn't: 'Oh, you're making fun of me right now.' And I wasn't!

Everyone has the heartbreak that shapes them in a way that they could never go back to the innocence that they had before.

I feel like making music because - and this has much to do with the way I was able to make this record - there's more of myself in it.
