I was this young boy and I saw this man with his hands round my sister's neck, I was just standing there with her two children beside me... Everything I've done since then was for the purpose of making women look stronger, not naรฏve. And so, when everyone started saying I was a misogynist, that really freaked me out. They didn't know me. They didn't know what I had seen in my life. That was the first part of fashion that I hated - people labeling me without knowing me.
Alexander McQueenPeople don't want to see clothes, they want to see something that fuels the imagination.
Alexander McQueenI use things that people want to hide in their heads. War, religion, sex; things we all think about, but donโt bring to the forefront. But I do and I force them to watch it
Alexander McQueenIt's the ugly things I notice more, because other people tend to ignore the ugly things.
Alexander McQueenWhen we put the antlers on the model and then draped over it the lace embroidery that we had made, we had to poke them through a ยฃ2,000 piece of work. But then it worked because it looks like she's rammed the piece of lace with her antlers. There's always spontaneity. You've got to allow for that in my shows.
Alexander McQueenI think sometimes I might scare the editors, because they might feel they're getting old and they're not understanding it. The problem lies on their side of the fence, not mine. I come from a different era and I design clothes for our era.
Alexander McQueenI'm prepared to forget about money if it affects my creativity because, remember, I started off with nothing. And I can do that again.
Alexander McQueenI think there has to be an underlying sexuality. There has to be a perverseness to the clothes. There is a hidden agenda in the fragility of romance. It's like a Story of O. I am not big on women looking naive. There has to be a sinister aspect, whether it's melancholy of sadomasochist. I think everyone has a deep sexuality, and sometimes it's good to use a little of it-and sometimes a lot of it-like a masquerade.
Alexander McQueenLondon's where I was brought up. It's where my heart is and where I get my inspiration.
Alexander McQueenMy friend George and I were walking on the beach in Norfolk, and there were thousands of [razor-clam] shells. They were so beautiful, I thought I had to do something with them. So, we decided to make [a dress] out of them. . . . The shells had outlived their usefulness on the beach, so we put them to another use on a dress. Then Erin [OโConner] came out and trashed the dress, so their usefulness was over once again. Kind of like fashion, really.
Alexander McQueenSome designers are so airy-fairy people can't connect with them. I hope people can relate to me, to a normal person who just happens to be a fashion designer, that people can take me as they find me. It's not the designer's job to care about what people think. Whatever else I've done, I've never tried to be something that I'm not.
Alexander McQueenIt is important to look at death because it is a part of life. It is a sad thing, melancholy but romantic at the same time. It is the end of a cycle - everything has to end. The cycle of life is positive because it gives room for new things.
Alexander McQueenI come from a different era and I design clothes for our era. I think of people I want to dress when I design.
Alexander McQueenThere is no way back for me now, I'm going to take you on journeys you've never dreamed possible
Alexander McQueenWhat I do is look at ancient African tribes, and the way they dress. The rituals of how they dress. . . . There's a lot of tribalism in the collections.
Alexander McQueenLet me not forget the use of my own hands, that of a craftsman with eyes... that reflect the technology around me.
Alexander McQueenBirds in flight fascinate me. I admire eagles and falcons. Iโm inspired by a feather but also its color, its graphics, its weightlessness and its engineering. Itโs so elaborate. In fact I try and transpose the beauty of a bird to women.
