And that, I suppose, is what I'd been trying to tell my mother that day: that her faith in justice and rationality was misplaced, that we couldn't overcome after all, that all the education and good intentions in the world couldn't help you plug up the holes in the universe or give you the power to change its blind, mindless course.
Barack ObamaI do think that when you go into red states, they're - so-called red states - I think they're troubled with certain excesses with respect to the Patriot Act, but they're also concerned with making sure we're secure against terrorism.
Barack ObamaThis kind of inequality - a level that we havenโt seen since the Great Depression - hurts us all. When middle-class families can no longer afford to buy the goods and services that businesses are selling...it drags down the entire economy from top to bottom. America was built on the idea of broad-based prosperity... Thatโs why a CEO like Henry Ford made it his mission to pay his workers enough so that they could buy the cars he made. Itโs also why a recent study showed that countries with less inequality tend to have stronger and steadier economic growth over the long run.
Barack ObamaPeople don't expect government to solve all their problems. But they sense, deep in their bones, that with just a slight change in priorities, we can make sure that every child in America has a decent shot at life, and that the doors of opportunity remain open to all. They know we can do better.
Barack ObamaThat's just how white folks will do you. It wasn't merely the cruelty involved; I was learning that black people could be mean and then some. It was a particular brand of arrogance, an obtuseness in otherwise sane people that brought forth our bitter laughter. It was as if whites didn't know they were being cruel in the first place. Or at least thought you deserved of their scorn.
Barack ObamaThereโs only one thing we can be sure of, and that is the love that we have -- for our children, for our families, for each other. The warmth of a small childโs embrace -- that is true. The memories we have of them, the joy that they bring, the wonder we see through their eyes, that fierce and boundless love we feel for them, a love that takes us out of ourselves, and binds us to something larger -- we know thatโs what matters. We know weโre always doing right when weโre taking care of them, when weโre teaching them well, when weโre showing acts of kindness. We donโt go wrong when we do that.
