Instead of giving in to cynicism and division, let's move forward with the confidence and optimism and unity that define us as a people.

In the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope.

The United States, we know what happens when we start dividing ourselves along lines of race or religion or ethnicity.

It is true, I worry about the hype. The only person more over-hyped than me is you.

My hope is that the president-elect [Donald Trump] coming in takes a similarly constructive approach, finding areas where we can cooperate with Russia, where our values and interests align. But that the president-elect also is willing to stand up to Russia where they are deviating from our values and international norms.

Together we resolve that a great nation must care for the vulnerable and protect its people from life's worst hazards and misfortune.

It [the Constitution] didn't break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution, at least as it's been interpreted, and the Warren court interpreted it in the same way that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties. It says what the states can't do to you, it says what the federal government can't do to you, but it doesn't say what the federal government or the state government must do on your behalf. And that hasn't shifted.
