What I consistently say to young people - I say it in the United States, but I'll say it here in Germany and across Europe: Do not take for granted our systems of government and our way of life. I think there is a tendency, because we have lived in an era that has been largely stable and peaceful, at least in advanced countries, where living standards have generally gone up, there is a tendency I think to assume that that's always the case.
Barack ObamaA brighter future is ours to write. Letโs begin this new chapterโโโtogetherโโโand letโs start the work right now.
Barack ObamaItโs not that I want to punish your success. I want to make sure that everybody who is behind you, that theyโve got a chance for success, too. My attitude is that if the economyโs good for folks from the bottom up, itโs gonna be good for everybody. I think when you spread the wealth around, itโs good for everybody.
Barack ObamaThey will tell you that the Americans who sleep in the streets and beg for food got there because theyโre all lazy or weak of spirit. That the inner-city children who are trapped in dilapidated schools canโt learn and wonโt learn and so we should just give up on them entirely. That the innocent people being slaughtered and expelled from their homes half a world away are somebody elseโs problem to take care of.
Barack ObamaIf we're not there making the argument then the cultural gulf that Republicans try to exploit saying, "Ah, these city slickers: they're all looking down on you, they don't care about you. They're just trying to help out their various special interest constituencies," that argument ends up being successful.
