I heard a political message in rock music. A liberation message. A message of freedom. I heard it in Elvis' voice.

I think initially, our audiences were filled with young men. You know, our initial audience was a lot of young guys who I think were trying to - who you played a bit of a big brother role for and were trying to sort out a lot of the same things right - soon as "Born To Run" hit, you know? So it was something that I worked pretty hard on.

You ride in a limousine the first time, it's a big thrill but after that it's just a stupid car.

Somewhere along the way, the idea, which I think was initially to get some fair transaction between people, went out the window. And what came in was, the most you can get and the least you can give. That's why cars are the way they are nowadays. It's just an erosion of all the things that were true and right about the original idea.

Certainly tolerance and acceptance were at the forefront of my music.

This music is forever for me. It's the stage thing, that rush moment that you live for. It never lasts, but that's what you live for.
