It is much, much worse to receive bad news through the written word than by somebody simply telling you, and Iโm sure you understand why. When somebody simply tells you bad news, you hear it once, and thatโs the end of it. But when bad news is written down, whether in a letter or a newspaper or on your arm in felt tip pen, each time you read it, you feel as if you are receiving the bad news again and again.

And yet it is always a surprise when it happens to someone we know. It is like walking up the stairs to your bedroom in the dark, and thinking there is one more stair than there is. Your foot falls down, through the air, and there is a sickly moment of dark surprise as you try and readjust the way you thought of things.

And in terms of the warnings on the back of the books, that really started as an honest assessment of their marketability.
