I've worked in a factory. I was a garbage man. I worked in a post office. It's not that long ago. I like to think that I'm just a regular guy.
Denzel WashingtonViola [Davis] is one of the great actors of her generation. She has one of these moments in the theater that I don't even know how to describe.
Denzel WashingtonWe rehearsed for two weeks [in "Fences"], and we taped out the whole house in the front, and the rooms, and we stood it up like a play. We tried to get off book and gave people small props.
Denzel WashingtonIt could be that it's not that different. Circumstances, no matter what the color is, could be similar.
Denzel WashingtonMichelle Pfeiffer hasn't been finding a lot of work recently because she doesn't like what a woman her age is offered. That's a real double standard. You get Sean Connery, who gets older and older, still playing opposite young ladies, but it doesn't work the other way around.
Denzel WashingtonI know, as an actor, I don't like sharing everything with the director. And it's fine if they don't with me.
Denzel WashingtonReligion to me is when man gets ahold of spirituality: "My god is right, yours is wrong." Religion to me is the human condition. "If you're a Muslim, you can't be a Christian." That to me is religion.
Denzel WashingtonI'll be working with Ridley's [Scott] brother, Tony, again, someone who needless to say we've had a great amount of success together. I trust him - so I won't have to think about it or I'll try not to.
Denzel WashingtonI wasn't allowed to go to movies when I was kid; my father was a minister. 101 Dalmatians and King of Kings, that was the extent of it.
Denzel WashingtonSo the desire you have, that itch that you have to be whatever it is you want to be ... that itch, that desire for good is Godโs proof to you sent already to indicate that itโs yours. You already have it. Claim it.
Denzel WashingtonThe last few years I've been saying I was ready to quit. It wasn't that interesting to me. Now that I'm directing, it's all new again.
Denzel WashingtonI even asked [Saniyya Sidney] why she wanted to be an actor and she said, "I'm serious about this. These other little kids they want to play, and I don't have time for that."
Denzel WashingtonEven though the story [Fences] is set during the 1950s, some contemporary women might have trouble understanding her decision.
Denzel WashingtonI'm not a big Hollywood star. I'm an actor. I'm called a star. That's not what I am. First of all I'm a human being; my profession is acting. People give you titles. They say you're an up and coming star, then they say you're a star, then they say you're a washed-up star. So I don't get caught up in what I'm called. My job, my profession, is acting.
Denzel WashingtonNothing in life is worthwhile unless you take risks. Fall forward. Every failed experiment is one step closer to success.
Denzel WashingtonWe'll all retire from life at some point. The great thing about acting is you don't necessarily have to retire.
Denzel WashingtonI'm very proud to be black, but black is not all I am. That's my cultural historical background, my genetic make-up, but it's not all of who I am nor is it the basis from which I answer every question.
Denzel WashingtonWhen you look in one direction where Troy's chair was, you could see out through the yard across the street, there was an old cork bar advertisement for five cents. We wanted it to feel like this was real life [in Fences] and that it extended blocks and blocks.
Denzel WashingtonAs an actor in the theater you're taught that you never play a bad guy. You have to love who you are. You can't say, "Oh, I'm a bad guy." How do you play that?
Denzel WashingtonCursed be the ground for our sake. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for us. For out of the ground we were taken, for the dust we are and to the dust we shall return.
Denzel WashingtonI've always seen it to be a privilege to make movies. It's a really expensive, creative medium.
Denzel WashingtonIt was never my dream to be famous. I didn't start acting to be a movie star. I started in the theater and my desire was to get better at my craft. It's still my desire. I don't consider myself a movie star, nor do I really have the desire to be one. I'm just an entertainer. An actor who works hard at his craft. Whatever labels people give me, that's not really me or part of my process.
Denzel WashingtonI called Scott Rudin, and I told him I wanted to do the play [Fences], so that's how the ball got rolling. I never said, "I'll do the play, and the next year I'll do the film, I just wanted to do the play."
Denzel WashingtonWhat we did [shooting "Fences"] was we got young students from Carnegie Mellon, the acting and theater students, and we had them as our understudies. I told them, "You have to be off book and be ready. If Viola [Davis] has to leave you have to jump in."
Denzel WashingtonThe greatest lesson I've learned in life is "Who knows what's good or bad?" Things come along that you really want, and they turn out to be the worst thing in the world. And some of the worst tragedies that you can conceive turn out to be the best things, the exact medicine you need in that moment.
Denzel WashingtonI always say the time to worry about flying is when you're on the ground. If you don't trust the captain, don't go.
Denzel WashingtonI think we're fascinated by gangsters and that whole lifestyle and crossing the line. We get sort of stuck in our normal lives, if you will, and you want to be bigger than life and I think people somehow live through these sorts of characters.
Denzel WashingtonI pray that you all put your shoes way under the bed at night so that you gotta get on your knees in the morning to find them. And while you're down there thank God for grace and mercy and understanding. We all fall short of the glory, we all got plenty.
Denzel WashingtonI asked my mother I said, "You divorced my dad, how did you decide? She said, "I decided twelve years before he knew it." I was like wow; I'm learning something new every day.
Denzel WashingtonThere are films that I don't like, and then someone will come up to me and say it's their favorite movie. The movies belong to the people. You make them and you put them out. For me, I love the process of making films. For me, my favorite film is always my next one.
