I have a sliding glass door on my closet, and when I slide it one way I can see all my uniforms, and the other way is all my own clothes.
Elle FanningThe first time we did it [voice-over], I was trying to use my face and my eyes more so and really portray that emotion, and that didn't matter. I realized you have to bring that emotion into the way you sound, and all those different layers have to be in your voice instead of the way you are wrinkling your eyebrows or whatever. I had to learn how to do that.
Elle FanningI remember going to the wardrobe-fitting for the first time and seeing all the cool high-waisted jeans and halter-tops - and that style is coming back anyway - so I loved that!
Elle FanningI'd much rather dress like a 5 year old than a 21 year old. I'd much rather wear a puffy sleeved shirt than some low-cut top.
Elle FanningWhat's the best part of a movie? I love to know what my name is. It's just so fun. That's the first thing I ask. It's just fun because you have a different name in every movie.
Elle FanningEveryone in my grade is turning 13, so there are bunches of bar and bat mitzvahs. They're very dressy. It's fun picking out outfits. One girl, for her bat mitzvah, wore a huge red ball gown!
Elle FanningAfter 'Somewhere' came out, people started to recognize me more. Whenever I was walking down the street, they'd be like, 'Oh, wow - are you Elle Fanning?' Before 'Somewhere,' they asked me if I was Dakota Fanning, because we looked alike, and I'd say, 'No, I'm her younger sister.
Elle FanningIt's fun because you can escape and learn about what other people's minds have created. It inspires you to think maybe you could come up with a creature yourself. I like that.
Elle FanningI get a lot of butterflies at auditions because I get so scared. It's scary because you've never met the people before. You have to meet them, and you have to hurry up and get to know them in five seconds. And then, you have to spill your emotions out to these strangers. It's funny.
Elle FanningI liked that you have to sometimes get into a situation that might not be a comfortable one - so, overcome your fear and good things will happen - if you want someone to know something, or you have to really take charge and do it yourself and go for it. With the Boxtrolls, they want people to know they're not mean guys, but they're too scared to show anyone. They have to eventually work up the courage to show that and gain the confidence.
Elle FanningMy generation, we're more accepting of narcissism. But we're looking at images that are dead, that are on your phone. My friends have apps to make you look skinny, to make your skin look perfect. And we look at these images and we're like, "That's beauty. That's perfect." But when you see a real person, you're like, "Wait, that's not perfect."
Elle FanningI feel like with every character, you try to put yourself in that person's position and just completely use your imagination. That's what I do, at least. Everything is just pretend.
Elle FanningI can't really remember my life without movies... [Growing up in Hollywood] is no different really. I make movies the same way other kids play tennis or go to piano lessons. I'm trying to get better at what I want to do, just like other kids are trying to get better at what they want to do.
Elle FanningI was 13 and a teenager, as well. When you're that age, you want to be an adult, in a way, but you don't want to have the responsibilities of an adult. You still want to have the freedom.
Elle FanningI go to ballet five days a week. I would love to go to a fashion show one day, because I never have.
Elle FanningI think as an artist that's the best thing you can have - a personal stamp on something.
Elle FanningFor my own style, I love vintage. 60's and 70's are my favorite. I love baby doll dresses and the soft colors. I try to mix a little bit of modern into that - maybe I'll wear it with boots. At my school we wear a uniform, but we have one day a week we can wear whatever we want.
Elle FanningI always look at Style.com and look at all the designers and I know all the model's names.
Elle FanningParis is my favorite place in the world. I've never been there, at all... But I wanna live there, even though I've never been.
Elle FanningThere's competitiveness in everything. In any job, I'm sure. I think there's also this stereotype that women together are catty and competitive, which is just - nobody ever talks about men being catty or competitive. I don't think that's fair.
Elle FanningI always try to do something very different with each character because that's why I like to do this, because I can become someone else completely and it's fun.
Elle FanningI'm a big fish eater. Salmon - I love salmon. My sister loves Chinese food and sushi and all that. I'm not as big of a fan, but she likes it so we eat it a lot. So I'm beginning to like it more. I don't like the raw sushi. I liked the cooked crab and lobster and everything.
Elle FanningAs my sister got older, I saw how excited she got when she got to do all of that stuff. I was always like, "One day, I'll get to do older parts." I thought that was cool.
Elle FanningI mean, it's amazing that I get to meet all these people. I've learned so much from all of them. I just worked with Sofia Coppola and that was amazing. I learned so much from her. I can't even describe how much fun I had.
Elle FanningI always wanted to be a part of Nicolas Winding Refn world, but knew he would never make a movie that has a teenage girl as a lead. Obviously not. Then I heard he was and it was in the fashion world. What? Just combining what we think of [with Refn] - masculinity and violence - in his films with that world was so interesting to me.
Elle FanningI would love to go to Paris. I have to go to Paris. I would love to go there, that's like my dream.
Elle FanningI get very emotional about time periods I never lived in, but I have a weird connection to them. The mystery of it becomes about hearing the stories of those eras, and creating nostalgia from those stories.
Elle FanningIt's cool because, as you get older, you get offered older parts. You're older, so you can't play 10 anymore. That was always very exciting for me.
Elle FanningI like mixing things. I wear a lot of boots. Love boots. And then jeans, but I like to wear them with a really ruffly top. Or I love high-waisted anything.
Elle FanningActing is different from dance. The black-and-whiteness of dancing is mostly about the technical form - like, this is how people have been doing it for millions of years. You can't let down those ballerinas who died a long time ago. My teacher will say, "This person would be ashamed!" And it's like, oh God. But with acting, it's different because people like something fresh. You can mix it up and create your own thing and it's not necessarily wrong.
Elle FanningI would love to work with my sister in a movie one day - like play sisters or something like that, because we've never been on-screen at the same time together.
Elle FanningThere is also an awakening to beauty, because when you're really young you don't have that concept or opinion in place, so you make your own discoveries. It's different now with technology, and the constant bombardment of images.
Elle FanningI like playing characters with as many emotions as possible. I'd love to play a really crazy person - someone truly out of her mind.
Elle FanningBeauty is a complex theme, for sure. We all have a different concept and opinion regarding it, but we all like to look at things that are aesthetically pleasing. I had the typical high school experience, where you question what is beauty, and you're comparing yourself to others, it was just part of growing up.
