When I did The Umbrella Academy, I studied Gabriel Bรก's art. I said, "Oh, this is what he likes to do here. Maybe I can push him to do a little more of this." You can play to those strengths. It's a different scenario with each artist.
Gerard WayI'm a visual thinker, so I think of everything visually, first. A lot of what an issue will become for me starts with me thinking, "What's a great cover?," or "What's the splash image?," or "What is the title of the issue? How do I see the text?" I think about all of that stuff, and then the story comes out of that imagery.
Gerard WayAnd what's with the shirt? You think you're in Fiji?" "It's like being on vactaion. all of the time.
Gerard WayLet me tell you how the story ends, where the good guys die and the bad guys win. It doesn't matter how many friend you make, but the graffite they write on your grave.
Gerard WayI am in the jungle and I am too fast for you. You have teeth and stripes and things that tear. But I am much too fastโฆ You want my flesh, but you donโt know where the jungle isโฆ Only I know where the jungle isโฆ Only I knowโฆ I am a gazelle. I am a gazelle and the jungle is my home.
Gerard WayJust draw 'cause you love it, you know, I think that's why you should be doing it. You should always be doing art for the right reasons, um, and with the best intentions. Anything at all is completely possible and I think that's what I like about drawing. I think it's just really fun. You can do anything you want. And that's part of, like, what's really enjoyable about it... is kind of losing yourself in it.
