Fairness is a concept that holds only in limited situations. Yet we want the concept to extend to everything, in and out of phase. From snails to hardware stores to married life. Maybe no one finds it, or even misses it, but fairness is like love. What is given has nothing to do with what we seek.

Haruki MurakamiIn ancient times, people weren't just male or female, but one of three types: male/male, male/female, female/female. In other words, each person was made out of the components of two people. Everyone was happy with this arrangement and never really gave it much a thought. But then God took a knife and cut everybody in half, right down the middle. So after that the world was divided just into male and female, the upshot being that people spend their time running around trying to locate their missing other half.
Haruki MurakamiOkay, letโs put it this way. I would like to sleep with you. But itโs alright if I donโt sleep with you. What Iโm saying is Iโd like to be as fair as possible. I donโt want to force anything on anybody, any more than Iโd want anything forced on me. Itโs enough that I feel your presence or see your commas swirling around me.
