I was thinking about the universe wanting to be noticed, and how I had to notice it as best I could. I felt that I owed a debt to the universe that only my attention could repay, and also that I owed a debt to everybody who didn’t get to be a person anymore and everyone who hadn’t gotten to be a person yet.

I don't really want to be the costar of anyone's life.

It is so hard to leave—until you leave. And then it is the easiest goddamned thing in the world.

You can't just make me different and then leave. You can't. You can't change me and make my whole life centered around you, then leave.

I'm not saying that everything is survivable. Just that everything except the last thing is.

We just sat there quiet for a long time, which was fine, and I was thinking about way back in the very beginning in the Literal Heart of Jesus.

The part I enjoy most is not the doing, but the noticing.
