The first duty of the educator, whether he is involved with the newborn infant or the older child, is to recognize the human personality of the young being and respect it.

It is necessary, then, to give the child the possibility of developing according to the laws of his nature, so that he can become strong, and, having become strong, can do even more than we dared hope for him.

To let the child do as he likes when he has not yet developed any powers of control is to betray the idea of freedom.

Do not offer the child the content of the mind, but the order for that content.

The ancient saying, "There is nothing in the intellect which was not first in some way in the senses," and senses being explorers of the world, opens the way to knowledge.

This then is the first duty of an educator: to stir up life but leave it free to develop.

To teach details is to bring confusion; to establish the relationship between things is to bring knowledge.
