I have some friends whose sermons are extremely practical - so practical that I can put them right to use. I'm trying to learn how to do that better; but I don't think my approach or style really has changed in these 30 years. Whether that's good or bad I don't know, but I don't think it has.

The next time you're disappointed, don't panic. Don't give up. Just be patient and let God remind you He's still in control.

The only mistake is not to risk making one.

When grace happens, we receive not a nice compliment from God but a new heart. Give your heart to Christ, and he returns the favor.

I think you have to be very careful about any story that puffs you up.

Most people have settled for a wimpy grace. It's something that doesn't change their lives. There is a difference between grace and mercy. Mercy is the decision of God not to punish us. But grace is the decision of God to save and bless us.

One phrase summarizes the horror of hell. "God isn't there."
