Proverbs are short sentences drawn from long experience.

For neither good nor evil can last for ever; and so it follows that as evil has lasted a long time, good must now be close at hand.

The wounds received in battle bestow honor, they do not take it away.

I do not say a proverb is amiss when aptly and reasonably applied, but to be forever discharging them, right or wrong, hit or miss, renders conversation insipid and vulgar.
