Creativity is a yearning for immortality

Science, Nietzsche had warned, is becoming a factory, and the result will be ethical nihilism.

It is an ironic habit of human beings to run faster when we have lost our way.

Dogmatism of all kinds--scientific, economic, moral, as well as political--are threatened by the creative freedom of the artist. This is necessarily and inevitably so. Whereas moral courage is the righting of wrongs, creative courage, in contrast, is the discovering of new forms, new symbols, new patterns on which a new society can be built.

Generally, the shaking is consciously felt in its positive aspects — as the wonderful new heaven and earth which love with its miracle and mystery has suddenly produced. Love is the answer, we sing. Our Western culture seems to be engaged in a romantic - albeit desperate - conspiracy to enforce the illusion that that is all there is to eros.

Consciousness is the awareness that emerges out of the dialectical tension between possibilities and limitations.
