Integrity without knowledge is weak and useless, and knowledge without integrity is dangerous and dreadful.

Let him go abroad to a distant country; let him go to some place where he is not known. Don't let him go to the devil, where he is known.

While an author is yet living, we estimate his powers by his worst performance; and when he is dead, we rate him by his best.

I am not able to instruct you. I can only tell that I have chosen wrong. I have passed my time in study without experience; in the attainment of sciences which can, for the most part, be but remotely useful to mankind. The task of an author is, either to teach what is not known, or to recommend known truths by his manner of adorning them; either to let new light in upon the mind, and open new scenes to the prospect, or to vary the dress and situation of common objects, so as to give them fresh grace and more powerful attractions, to spread such flowers over the regions through which the intellect has already made its progress, as may tempt it to return, and take a second view of things hastily passed over, or negligently regarded.

He that compares what he has done with what he has left undone, will feel the effect which must always follow the comparison of imagination with reality; he will look with contempt on his own unimportance, and wonder to what purpose he came into the world; he will repine that he shall leave behind him no evidence of his having been, that he has added nothing to the system of life, but has glided from youth to age among the crowd, without any effort for distinction.

What a strange narrowness of mind now is that, to think the things we have not known are better than the things we have known.
