I used to tweet, but it's an act of futility. You're not really making any impact, and if you find yourself in a mood when you wanna be a bit controversial and you post something, you suddenly realise, 'Oh my God!' because you've opened yourself up to a bunch of criticism from strangers.

It's great the way the old-time directors used to manipulate the hell out of you. You see someone dying and all of a sudden a ghost would come out and they go walking hand in hand up the stairway.

Often people going into directing want to learn as much as they possibly can about "technique." And I say the hell with that.

In fact, every day I'll read a chapter of some art book. I don't know why. It's just a habit.

I think that's become passe, but if you can surround yourself with a kind of monument to yourself and your family - a statement - and you can afford it, then that's a noble project.

Dreams cost nothing. They are free. The hard part is just keeping them going.
