Happiness is something everyone wants for themselves and the people they love. However, many of us spend our lives searching for happiness as if it is some reward we will receive for something we have done or endured. No, happiness is not something we should strive for and expect to come from outside after hard work and much deprivation.
Happiness is a feeling we can experience every day, or at least more often than we do now. It is a feeling just like love, gratitude, fear and so on. Here are a few steps that are guaranteed to give you some happiness right now. And if you can make them a habit for yourself, you'll be a happier person.
Be grateful every day
Gratitude is a highly underrated medicine. Every time we are grateful, we become a little happier than before. Pay attention to how you feel when you truly give thanks to life for something. You'll notice that it feels good. Make it a habit - every night before you go to sleep, give thanks for the best thing that happened to you today. There will be days when it will be hard to think of such a thing, but trust me - there is something to be thankful for every day.
Find time for the things you love
Very often, caught up in the daily routine and countless tasks, we forget to do the things we love. Many of us don't even remember what those things are anymore. And these are among the most important habits to acquire in order to lead a happy life. Identify at least five things that bring you good cheer and make time for them, if not every day, at least twice a week. This can be anything from driving, to playing sports, to going out, to a favorite show or book. Check your list every day and try to do at least one thing that brings you pleasure.
Communicate with a nice person
We all have at least one person who is a real pleasure to interact with. After spending time with him or her we feel somehow light, relaxed, satisfied, understood and happy. Think about who that person is for you and make it a point to communicate at least once a week. That's the bare minimum, especially given the dozens of communication channels we can choose between. You have no excuse, call your loved one right now.
Be active
It's not about lifting weights or running 10km (although if that brings you happiness, do it). It's about making time for some physical activity at least twice a week. This could be walking, dancing, group sports, going to the gym, climbing stairs or whatever brings you joy. Be sure to find time in your schedule for movement.
Escape to nature
If you live in a big city, you'll probably have a harder time finding time for nature walks. Still, harder isn't impossible. Try to visit a mountain, park, lake, eco-trail, or any place in nature twice a month or at least once a month. This is guaranteed to fill you with good emotions, and there will definitely be more happiness in your life.
