My music is - I don't want to say my main focus, but it's what comes most naturally to me.
Gerard WayAs long as somebody is guaranteed a certain number of sales you know you're gonna keep seeing these vanity projects. I mean they have a place, they serve a function they can bring people into comics.
Gerard WayDon't ever let the media tell you what your body is supposed look like. You're beautiful the way you are. Stay beautiful, keep it ugly.
Gerard WayIt erases everything I hate about myself. Nothing can hurt me. I feel completely invincible. I feel like everyone else on that stage is invincible and we're capable of anything. There's no stopping us.
Gerard WayCecil Castellucci is writing Shade, who is the perfect writer for it. I love her young adult stuff, and it's pretty hardcore and visceral, so I knew she was going to bring that to the book.
Gerard WayI knew that I always wanted to keep making music, but I knew that comics needed to be a part of my life.
Gerard WaySo people keep asking me what this badge is for... this badge makes me the sheriff, the sheriff of Emo town, so get your straight irons and eyeliner ready!
Gerard WayI learned that the world doesn't want to be saved, and it will f**king punch you in the face if you try.
Gerard WayRemember the first time you went to a show and saw your favorite band. You wore their shirt, and sang every word. You didn't know anything about scene politics, haircuts, or what was cool. All you knew was that this music made you feel different from anyone you shared a locker with. Someone finally understood you. This is what music is about.
Gerard WayPeople have evolved into something selfish, greedy and intolerant. People are unaccepting, because of religion, race, gender, sexual orientation... I've seen it in punk clubs, and I've seen it in the world.
Gerard WaySometimes it can be really exciting, but I avoid the blank page now. What I do is hand write everything. When you're hand writing, there's never a blank page, really. There's so much you can do with that.
Gerard WayI do a lot of research, I try to think about how it relates to music and I just do a ton of drawing. It's much easier to work your ideas out that way.
Gerard WayIf you're ever in a dark place, don't resort to violence. Talk to someone; whether it be a therapist, teacher, parent, or just someone you can trust. We all have our dark places and it's important that you get help.
Gerard WayIf something was bugging you, you talk about it. But that's the cool thing: we [My Chemical Romance] don't bug each other. We just have deep discussions about art and music like friends. And we disagree about stuff but the disagreements are so healthy and intelligently thought out. We're very respectful of each other's opinions, especially about music.
Gerard WayWhen I did The Umbrella Academy, I studied Gabriel Bรก's art. I said, "Oh, this is what he likes to do here. Maybe I can push him to do a little more of this." You can play to those strengths. It's a different scenario with each artist.
Gerard WayEvery big adventure should feel like your last. Every attempt should feel like a final charge up the hill. Tomorrow doesn't exist.
Gerard WayThe world is gonna try to clean you up, what the f**k you gonna do about it? You're gonna say, "I wanna stay ugly".
Gerard WayAs soon as I go into a Starbucks I take off my sunglasses. I want to be recognised and I want free coffee.
Gerard WayAll your quirks and all your problems - even your depressions and your failures - thatโs what makes you you.
Gerard WayLet me tell you how the story ends, where the good guys die and the bad guys win. It doesn't matter how many friend you make, but the graffite they write on your grave.
Gerard WayWhat I like about The Sims is that I don't have a normal life at all, so I play this game where these people have these really boring, mundane lives. It's fun.
Gerard WayI start my process hand written, and then I dump it in. It's like you're getting a second draft 'cause when I put it in the computer, I fix it and change stuff. That's my process. I picked that up from speaking to Neil Gaiman and Joe Hill. I was messing around with the idea of starting to write more, writing a book and doing things like this, and I reached out for advice. They were like, "Oh, we hand write, and then we dump it all in." I was like, "Great! There's no more blank pages."
Gerard WayI went to school in drag, in art school and my day was completely different because everybody thought I was a chick. You should see me as a chick. So I went as a girl, as like an experiment and it worked really well and everyone was really nice to me but I couldn't talk obviously... you know train conductors were really cool to me on my commute... HA! I looked hot as a chick!
Gerard WayLearning to be extremely disciplined has been the key for me. I work really hard during work hours and family really hard during family hours. Family does always come first though, in any situation.
Gerard WayLet's have a day in the life of Gerard." Going to get coffee! Going to get coffee!' That's all it would be.
Gerard WayWeโve always been fighters. There will always be something to fight against. So weโll always fight, underdogs or not. If you put a wall in front of us, we donโt look to go round it. We just bust straight through.
Gerard WayWhat I like about The Sims is that I don't have a normal life at all, so I play this game where these people have these really boring, mundane lives. It's fun. My Sims family is called the Cholly family. I don't know why I picked that name; it's kind of random. The teenage daughter is my favourite, because I just had her go through this Goth phase. She's really kind of nerdy and she just became a concert violinist, which is pretty huge for the family. And she got into private school. But she started wearing black lipstick and she dyed her hair purple. It's pretty huge.
Gerard WayI notice a lot of people think they can solve their problems with antidepressants. That, I noticed, being like a bigger issue, like, it really strips people of who they are. Like, all your quirks and all your problems, even your depressions and your failures, that's what makes you, you. And there's a lot of drugs out there that will take that away from you.
Gerard WayIf you chase the art, you really can't fail because you'll always be able to look at yourself in the mirror. And that's not about making angry decisions, either, it's about always doing the right thing for you, your fans and your art.
Gerard WayI had no direction. I thought, 'I need to make a difference in my life,' and music was my answer.
