I donโt like to hurt peopleโs feelings, and I donโt like to knock other writers as a matter of principle.
Lydia DavisWhen I'm trying a new form- trying to do something I'm not used to doing, which was true of the novel.
Lydia DavisTo be simple, I would say a story has to have a bit of narrative, if only "she says," and then enough of a creation of a different time and place to transport the reader.
Lydia DavisYou know the pain is part of the whole thing. And it isnโt that you can say afterwards the pleasure was greater than the pain and thatโs why you would do it again. That has nothing to do with it. You canโt measure it, because the pain comes after and it lasts longer. So the question really is, Why doesnโt that pain make you say, I wonโt do it again? When the pain is so bad that you have to say that, but you donโt.
Lydia DavisI don't feel I have to struggle against allegory. I let the readers do the interpreting.
Lydia DavisI attempt all day, at work, not to think about what lies ahead, but this costs me so much effort that there is nothing left for my work. I handle telephone calls so badly that after a while the switchboard operator refuses to connect me. So I had better say to myself, Go ahead and polish the silverware beautifully, then lay it out ready on the sideboard and be done with it. Because I polish it in my mind all day longโthis is what torments me (and doesn't clean the silver).
