Of all the decisions an executive makes, none is as important as the decisions about people, because they determine the performance capacity of the organization.

Leaders shouldn?t attach moral significance to their ideas: Do that, and you can?t compromise.

The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say "I." And that's not because they have trained themselves not to say "I." They don't think "I." They think "we"; they think "team." They understand their job to be to make the team function. They accept responsibility and don't sidestep it, but "we" gets the credit. This is what creates trust, what enables you to get the task done.

The next thing to be said about what long-range planning is not, is that it does not deal with future decisions. It deals with the futurity of present decisions. Decisions exist only in the present. The question that faces the long-range planner is not what we should do tomorrow.

It is willingness of people to give of themselves over and above the demands of the job that distinguishes the great from the merely adequate.
