I like and I love everything that has to do with cinema, writing, directing, editing, creating music, and even acting.
Werner HerzogWhen you look at my film you see footage that is unbelievably awesome and beautiful and dangerous looking. It's something that is very, very cinematic.
Werner HerzogThere's happens to be a volcano in the vicinity and there's some talk about a volcano as well, so that's the title Salt and Fire
Werner HerzogI'm reminded of an interview Larry King had on his talk show with one of Michael Jackson's sisters. He's talking about how many millions she made on her latest record, and all of a sudden, she looks at him tearfully and says, "Larry, you know, I'm not interested in money or sales or songs. I'm a spiritual person." And I thought, "Oh my god..."
Werner HerzogRead, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read...if you don't read, you will never be a filmmaker.
Werner HerzogThe opinion of the public is sacred. The director is a cook who merely offers different dishes to them and has no right to insist they react in a particular way. A film is just a projection of light, completed only when it crosses the gaze of the audience[...]
Werner HerzogYou are in a place that has not been seen for tens of thousands of years, because it was so sealed off. There is such silence that when you hold your breath you can hear your own heartbeat. Everything is so fresh that you have the sensation that the painters have merely retreated deeper into the dark and that they are looking at you.
Werner HerzogI've never left my culture. I've left my country, but I've not left my culture. In the same way, you shouldn't be worried why George Lucas is going to the outer galaxy to make a movie. He's still making a film within his culture; he's making an American film. I go to Thailand or the Peruvian jungle, the Amazon, and I still make Bavarian films.
Werner HerzogI try to be after something that is deeply reverberating inside of our souls, some deep echo from - even from prehistory. What makes us humans? How do we communicate? Where are we going at this moment? Something for an audience where they can step outside of themselves, where they can be almost like in ecstasy of truth, some sort of deep illumination. And that's what I'm trying in documentaries and in feature films.
Werner HerzogNetflix knew I was going to North Korea and Ethiopia and Iceland. They saw the film and liked it and that was that.
Werner HerzogI am so used to plunging into the unknown that any other surroundings and form of existence strike me as exotic and unsuitable for human beings.
Werner HerzogThere's more substance in my prose and my poetry than in all my films together. Writing is a more direct way of expressing yourself because, in cinema, you always have finances, organization, actors, technical apparatus and all that stuff coming in between.
Werner HerzogI was able to persuade them to let me shoot in areas that were beyond the volcano itself. Beyond the joint scientific program between Cambridge University and North Korean scientists. I was able to film in a kindergarten, subway, other things you would not normally be allowed to do.
Werner HerzogAs for the "anger" of the volcano, we leave it up to the local populations who create their demons, their gods and their divine punishment.
Werner HerzogI have learned a lot through defeats, and, until today, it's - I'm still haunted by defeats, and they do happen. Sometimes, a film of mine is rejected. And how do you deal with it? And you have to learn how to deal with it and survive anyway.
Werner HerzogWe are just a blip. I found it very interesting when Clive [Oppenheimer] interviewed the Ethiopian scientists and asked them, "Do we have another 100,000 years?" In their calculation, mankind will be entering a very critical phrase a thousand years from now.
Werner HerzogI'm quite convinced that cooking is the only alternative to film making. Maybe there's also another alternative, that's walking on foot.
Werner HerzogI'm not a journalist; I'm a poet. I had a discourse, an encounter with these people but I never had a list of questions.
Werner HerzogFor example, the face of Nicole Kidman in Queen of the Desert and she is the most beautiful goddess on screen that you can find anywhere around in the world. There's no imperfections, and yet I don't need to know every single pore in her face.
Werner HerzogThe elections have a different platform, the town hall is the platform for it. But the other question behind all this is should I run for president?
Werner HerzogThe punishment itself is something I respectfully disagree with, but for thousands and thousands of years it was practiced everywhere.
Werner HerzogOf course the entire planet Earth consists of magma under us, and only the very inner-core is different.
Werner HerzogAmbition is to be the fastest runner on this planet, to be the first on the South Pole, which is a grotesque perversion of ambition. It's an ego trip, and I'm not on an ego trip. I don't have ambitions - I have a vision.
Werner HerzogI'm not into digital marketing, downloading, or streaming - I've always been a man of the theaters.
Werner HerzogClive [Oppenheimer] and I figured out that I'm the only one probably in the film industry who is clinically sane. I say that as a joke, but there's a grain of truth to it. I'm not a stupid daredevil who jumps into the crater of the volcano to get the closest close-up, I'm not one of those. And you have to be aware that you have a crew with you and you are responsible.
Werner HerzogIt has always been my aim to find that sort of passion and figure out how to transform it into cinema.Timothy Treadwell's footage was almost like a diary, and he had always dreamt of becoming the movie star in his own gigantic production.
Werner HerzogIn the Chauvet Cave, there is a painting of a bison embracing the lower part of a naked female body. Why does Pablo Picasso, who had no knowledge of the Chauvet Cave, use exactly the same motif in his series of drawings of the Minotaur and the woman? Very, very strange.
Werner HerzogLife in the oceans must be sheer hell. A vast, merciless hell of permanent and immediate danger. So much of a hell that during evolution some speciesโincluding manโcrawled, fled onto some small continents of solid land, where the Lessons of Darkness continue.
Werner HerzogLook into the eyes of a chicken and you will see real stupidity. It is a kind of bottomless stupidity, a fiendish stupidity. They are the most horrifying, cannibalistic and nightmarish creatures in the world.
Werner HerzogThe collapse of the stellar universe will occur - like creation - in grandiose splendor.
Werner HerzogIt is something more fleeting than what you normally see. People might somehow take it into their own dreams, into their own life, in a way. I hear it more recently; people are telling me that when they leave the theater and see one of my films, they are not alone anymore. It's probably more that kind of feeling. If I managed to do a film like that, everything is fine.
Werner HerzogYou better make yourself acquainted to what the requirements are, what the value of money is all about and how you create a long-term survival, and in many cases it has to do with how you handle finances.
Werner HerzogI am somebody who creates images, with my perspectives, fascinations and my instincts as a narrator. You have to activate the audience's imagination. If you are just giving them scientific results, they would forget the film in five minutes flat.
Werner HerzogIf you go to Florence, it has all surface beauty, but like Venice, it's simply a museum of Renaissance times. Los Angeles is raw, uncouth and bizarre, but it's a place of substance. It has more new horizons than any other place.
Werner HerzogIt was a subject [ volcanoes] that was dormant in me for a long time and it popped up 40 years ago when I made a [short] film on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe about a volcano that was about to explode and a single farmer refused to leave ["La Soufriรจre"].
Werner HerzogI always loved celluloid cameras in the early days that were sturdy and reliable. Even under tropical conditions and downpour of rain, it would still work.
Werner HerzogI cannot work fast enough. I cannot cope fast enough, really. And just releasing a film is hard.
Werner HerzogWe have volcanoes also in our immediate neighborhood. I wish we didn't have to travel that far. Probably the kind of magnitude and awesome raw power of them is very fascinating, and of course it's very cinematic.
Werner HerzogI'm a very circumspect and prudent person, and I eliminate danger as far as it can be done.
Werner HerzogOtherwise you have to repeat a lot when you're filming. And I've seen the film and it's in a border town in Mexico close to the border with the United States, so of course you have a lot of traffic and noise and dogs barking right nearby, and for that you have to repeat a lot and Robert Rodriguez didn't do that. Smart, smart, smart, you better have smarts also.
