They [Barnes Theatre Club] were a very good group, and for some reason when I finished the backstage thing, I just decided to that I should try to act. So I auditioned for Guys and Dolls and got a little tiny part as some Cuban dancer or something and then in the next play I got the lead part, and then I got my agent. So I owe everything to that little club.
Robert PattinsonI guess I had to learn how to run properly. I spent a lot of time on a giant treadmill, like one of those wheels mice run around on, and got filmed doing it to improve my form.
Robert PattinsonI don't really like watching my stuff. It makes me feel sick. You imagine you look a certain way in your head, and when it looks even the slightest bit different from what you imagine, you go, 'Rubbish!'
Robert PattinsonWhen something or someone is hyped and you're put on the forefront of a lot of things, people want to tear you down. That's kind of scary, especially when you're not really putting yourself out there.
Robert PattinsonIn America there is a channel called TruTV which is just reruns of 'Cops' and 'World's Dumbest Criminals'. I could watch that the entire day.
Robert PattinsonThe script changed so much over seven months and just had loads and loads of re-writes. I tried to tailor things to what I was interested in, like the relationship with the dad changed quite a lot because I thought one of the things when you're a young guy one of your biggest fears is this irrational fear of walking in your dad's footsteps and living the same life as him. I thought, even if your dad's a good guy, you just want to assert your independence on everything and it causes these irrational sort of rages.
Robert PattinsonI think so much of a director's job is just to convince you that what you're doing is worthwhile. "Yes, this does mean something, we're not just messing around." Even though at the end of the day it's a film. But at the time it's something else. I don't feel like I'm making a film, I'm confronting things in myself. I don't know what it is. So if someone is enthusiastic enough to convince you that it's important it's kind of magical.
Robert PattinsonNo, not really. I mean, at the end of the day, it's just a part. You just go into it, and like your life, you're walking along the street, as a really bad analogy, you step on a little stone, and it just kind of flies away and you have no idea where it's going. And then you are just trying not to drown afterwards. And that's my life. See, that was really terrible.
Robert PattinsonYou're trying to play someone [Edward Cullen] who's seen by a lot of people as being this perfect thing, but what is that? That doesn't really mean anything. You're trying to play an archetype on one hand and then a character on the other, so I felt insanely frustrated right up until the last shot, and then it ended.
Robert PattinsonI don't even know if Stephenie Meyer could tell you why she was so fixated on this very, very contained story [The Twilight] with obsessive characters. It's just an anomaly. That's a terrible answer. I don't know.
Robert PattinsonIt's hard for them because they want to be proud of me, but I keep reminding them that it's all luck. Luck is what got me here, nothing else.
Robert PattinsonContact lenses make me miserable, as soon as I put them in. That's what creates the pouting and brooding character.
Robert PattinsonI can't see any advantage to fame. I'm happy with the life I have now. I've got the same two friends I've had since I was 12, and I can't see that changing.
Robert PattinsonIf it's just screaming - and I know this sounds so ridiculous - that gets old. But sometimes when there's literal chaos, it's like being in a war zone, and that's kind of exciting. You're just running through the crowd of people chasing after you and no one knows what's going on.
Robert PattinsonWhen you read the [Twilight series], it's like saying 'Edward Cullen is so beautiful I creamed myself'. I mean every line is like that. He's the most ridiculous person who's so amazing at everything. I think a lot of actors tried to play that aspect. I just couldn't do it. And the more I read the script, the more I hated this guy, so that's how I played him, as a manic-depressive who hates himself. Plus, he's a 108-year old virgin, so there's clearly some issues there
Robert PattinsonI don't really see the point in washing your hair. If you don't care if your hair's clean or not then why would you wash it?
Robert PattinsonI get a lot more abuse in England. That's just a general English attitude. I did the same thing to famous people. It's just your instinct.
Robert PattinsonI never thought people would buy the soundtrack [to Twilight]. So, it's a little more nerve-wracking now. I don't know.
Robert PattinsonOne of the interesting things about having an international fanbase is that every single country has a different reaction to you and to the movie.
Robert PattinsonI can’t remember who said it, but a soul and a heaven must exist because good people aren’t rewarded enough on Earth. I always liked that idea, if that makes sense.
Robert PattinsonI'd go and get really drunk somewhere ... in the street. Pass out somewhere and sleep in the gutter.
Robert PattinsonYou really, really feel like you have no control [participating in franchise] . I mean, it's a huge juggernaut, especially when something becomes part of the cultural landscape in a way as well. It's really scary because you get trapped and you get scared of changing, which is the worst thing that can happen if you want to be any kind of artist.
Robert PattinsonPeople ask me if I'm afraid of getting typecast, but you can't be afraid of that. It's really not up to you. I'm getting other parts that aren't vampires. I don't know if people will accept me in them, or whatever, but there's really nothing to be afraid of.
Robert PattinsonI don't know how people will remember this series [of the Twilight Saga] at all. It's crazy how intense people are.
Robert PattinsonI'm always shocked by the people who I'm attracted to. It's always completely random. I generally like people who are a bit crazy but yeah, that's pretty much my only prerequisite.
Robert PattinsonIt's always been strange to me that someone can say they're a vampire fan. I'm not a non-fan, but it's such an unusual thing to be a fan of. That's like saying, "I love zombie movies! I just love 'em! They're my favorite!" That's more of a psychological problem than being an actual fan.
Robert PattinsonI'm so surprised it's worked out that way. I was just thinking the whole time that I've never had the personality to fit into that. I'm not really afraid of it, because I don't even know how to play up that aspect.
Robert PattinsonI really like Blade. I wish people would make hard R-rated fantasy movies again. It's completely irrelevant, but people should do that more. I haven't seen that many vampire things.
Robert PattinsonWhen the whole world is watching you, they create stories and give you labels that have nothing to do with you. It's almost impossible for you not to explode!
Robert PattinsonI actually quite like working with kids and I like working with animals, which everybody says you shouldn't do. It makes you feel like you're not acting, as soon as you have someone who's providing stuff to react to.
Robert PattinsonI just saw Twilight on TV, for the first time, a few days ago, and, when my song came on, I was just thinking that is so bazaar that I actually had a song in the movie.
Robert PattinsonI go through fan mail myself, but I think I might get them censored, because I'm always expecting to get the one thing that says, 'I know where you live and I'm going to kill you!' I'm always expecting that to come, but it never seems to arrive. I never get any negative mail, so someone must be censoring them.
Robert PattinsonI quite liked Sharkey and George and then there was a cartoon with rapper MC Hammer in it - Hammertime - I loved that cartoon, it was genius! They don't make cartoons like that anymore.
Robert PattinsonHaving a persona people recognize, it's the thing that probably gets you paid the most - but it's also the thing that virtually every actor in the world doesn't want. 'Cause, like, no one would believe me if I wanted to play something ultra-realistic, like a gangster or something.
Robert PattinsonMy little cousin tells me I look like Magneto so I guess that's who I should probably play.
Robert PattinsonIf I do decide one day to stop acting, I just hate the idea of people going: 'Oh, did you ever do anything else besides that Twilight thing?'
