I've learned some of the greatest life lessons from growing up in the skate and punk rock communities.
Mark HoppusThe strongest human emotion is probably love. I think it's universal. I think that across language and country and time and everything else, probably love.
Mark HoppusParents don't understand kids and kids don't understand parents. My parents were divorced when I was really young and I went to live with my dad.
Mark HoppusOnce I was in the Blink-182, going to Iraq was really touching. It was kind of emo for me, going and meeting soldiers who were, like, 19 and hadn't even met their kids... Or dealing with depression. Just being with those soldiers and traveling with them in helicopters and people with M-16s. It was an eye-opener.
Mark HoppusThen when we did the untitled record, we just didn't feel like putting joke stuff on it, so we didn't. It wasn't really a deliberation or a real introspective thing like, "Are we going to joke on this one, are we not going to joke on this one?" We just didn't feel like it on the untitled one, so we didn't.
Mark HoppusThank God I never got in a fight. All of the jock dudes hated me, but all of their girlfriends thought I was nice so they wouldn't touch me. It was infuriating to them.
Mark HoppusHard work, studying and perseverance will get you no where in life......it's all about kissing ass
Mark HoppusI think when people are jumping on top of each other's ideas, it elevates it a lot more than me going into the studio and working on something all by myself for a while.
Mark HoppusIf your like me, you like to wait till your parents are having sex and walk in on them and act like its an accident, and then ask if you can join in.
Mark HoppusAll I can hope to do is instill great morality in my son and trust him along the way. The music he listens to or how he chooses to wear his hair doesn't define his moral compass, and if he wants to listen to country music and wear a cowboy hat too, that's fine.
Mark HoppusI grew up the biggest fan of the Cure. Knew every lyric, had every album, B-side, single, poster, everything. Then cut to fifteen years later, and we're working on songs together. Ridiculous.
Mark HoppusMusic is life. Music defines peoples' experience on this planet. Name one time in your life that wasn't punctuated by the music you listened to at the time. When people are down, they listen to music that commiserates that emotion. When people are amped up, they listen to more upbeat, loud songs.
Mark HoppusEvery one of those old songs like "What's My Age Again?" and "All the Small Things" is like a tattoo or a scrapbook or an old photograph. There are just songs that define certain moments in your life. Everyone has a song that got them through a bad breakup or they put on and it made them feel like they wanted to go out and kick the world's ass with their friends on a weekend. Those songs still feel like that to me.
Mark HoppusIdeally, each week, I'd like to have rad, intelligent, creative, funny guests with different takes on the world of music. I will ask them all what their favorite blink-182 song is, and what they like best about me as a person.
Mark HoppusI like the beaches in Orange County the best. I think Orange County has great beaches. Everything from Dana Point to Newport to Laguna; all over the place.
Mark HoppusThe fact that music can induce Goosebumps draw a tear inspire and connect is one of my favorite parts of being human
Mark HoppusI'm always asking friends what new music they're into, and I love showing people new talented artists.
Mark HoppusI feel like anyone can be a kid forever as long as you have that mindset and attitude towards the world.
Mark HoppusI think people take Blink-128 more seriously now than they did before. And it's largely our fault because we called our records Enema of the State and Take Off Your Pants and Jacket. We were always kind of the underdogs, especially critically. People wrote us off as this joke band. But the people who listened to Blink knew that we were silly and whatever, but we wrote songs about divorce and suicide and depression. Those kids that were listening to Blink are now the ones that control all these outlets that used to just write us off.
Mark HoppusI don't think of them as teenage songs. The things that happen to you in high school are the same things that happen your entire life. You can fall in love at 60; you can get rejected at 80.
Mark HoppusI kinda like the duality of California and the dark side, the underbelly of California, and I think that's what this album ['California']feels like - there's endless hope and optimism but there's also a darker side.
Mark HoppusI don't really have any secret shames. If I like an artist, I like them. Nothing to feel embarrassed about.
Mark HoppusThere's also this weirdness to California, this darkness, it's a place where people come to follow their dreams and sometimes don't make it.
Mark HoppusMake yourself do something stupid so when you really do something stupid you won't feel so bad
Mark HoppusI don't want to spend a month and a half in a studio with music I don't like, and fortunately I don't have to.
Mark HoppusHe [Patrick Stump] is been a friend of ours for a long time, and when we were talking about working with different producers and songwriters for the record, Patrick's name came up. We were excited to work with him - he's a very gifted lyricist and songwriter, and a really cool guy and it was a pleasure to work with him in the studio.
Mark HoppusEverything in high school seems like the most important thing that's ever happened in your life. It's not. You'll get out of high school and you never see those people again. All the people who torment and press you won't make a difference in your life in the long haul.
Mark HoppusCalifornia to me as a concept or as an idea always seems like endless optimism and endless opportunity - when people think of California they think of palm trees and blue skies and gorgeous sunsets and beaches and everything else.
Mark HoppusWe really try not to spend too much time thinking about what we're supposed to be a punk band, or whatever. We do the exact same thing today that we been doing for years and years and years.
Mark HoppusI like to get Honey Combs, and Apple Jax, and Captain Crunch Berries and mix them all together, but I'm freak and I use water instead of milk.
Mark HoppusI just want everyone out there to know that I'm super-awesome and a great guy and really cool to talk to and that I appreciate all the support.
Mark HoppusThe process of introducing people to new music is amazing. It's a gift. One of the best parts of any day is when someone says, 'Hey, check out this new band...'
Mark HoppusWhen people are amped up, they listen to more upbeat, loud songs. A Frank Sinatra album sets a certain mood, just as a Clash record sets another.
Mark HoppusLook at me... look at me... I need the attention, oooh I'm punk rock I got some tattoos, I got some piercings. If I'm gonna get some piercings then I want everyone to see it...I don't need to advertise my punkness. A real punk doesn't need to show off...Its like a Karate man... the Karate man bleed on the inside. A real punk is punk on the inside.
Mark HoppusWe worked very hard on that untitled record to do something different and that we were proud of and to try a bunch of different ideas. It was like this gigantic musical laboratory that we were going to every day. I love that record, I think that's one of the high watermarks of us as a band.
