I admit to having worn suede and leather pants myself for a while, but you just never feel clean, and it's degenerate, anyway, to wear animal skins.... So I went back to bluejeans after my degenerate period.
Andy WarholActually, I jade very quickly. Once is usually enough. Either once only, or every day. If you do something once itโs exciting, and if you do it every day itโs exciting. But if you do it, say, twice or just almost every day, itโs not good any more.
Andy WarholI've always thought that the President could do so much here to help change images. If the President would go into a public bathroom in the Capitol, and have the TV cameras film him cleaning the toilets and saying 'Why not? Somebody's got to do it!' then that would do so much for the morale of the people who do the wonderful job of keeping the toilets clean. I mean, it is a wonderful thing that they're doing.
Andy WarholIf you want to know all about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface of my paintings and films and me, and there I am. There's nothing behind it.
Andy WarholIt's funny when people don't know you and they meet you for the first time and think you're so great. When fans know you for more than three or four times the magic is gone.
Andy WarholYou meet rich people and you hang around with them, and one night they've had a few drinks and they say 'I'll buy it!' Then they tell their friends, 'You must have this person's work, darling,' and that's all you need. That's all it takes. Get it?
Andy WarholWhat I was actually trying to do in my early movies was show how people can meet other people and what they can do and what they can say to each other. That was the whole idea: two people getting acquainted.
Andy WarholAt the times in my life when I was feeling the most gregarious and looking for bosom friendships, I couldn't find any takers, so that exactly when I was alone was when I felt the most like not being alone... I became a loner in my own mind... I decided I'd rather be alone.
Andy WarholJust like New Yorkers themselves, the trees in New York [city] work harder than any others in the world.
Andy WarholEdward Smith: What do you think is the characteristic of a really nice person? Some people you obviously do like more than others. Andy Warhol: Ummm, well, if they talk a lot. ES: What, and don't make you talk? AW: Yeah, yes, that's a really nice person.
Andy WarholUptown is for people who have already done something. Downtown is where theyโre doing something now. I live uptown but I love downtown.
Andy WarholPaintings are too hard. The things I want to show are mechanical. Machines have less problems. I'd like to be a machine, wouldn't you?
Andy WarholSince people are going to be living longer and getting older, they'll just have to learn how to be babies longer.
Andy WarholI'd rather do new stuff. The old stuff is better to talk about than to see. It always sounds better than it really is.
Andy WarholThe biggest price you pay for love is that you have to have somebody around, you can't be on your own, wich is always so much better.
Andy WarholFantasy love is much better than reality love. Never doing it is very exciting. The most exciting attractions are between two opposites that never meet.
Andy WarholMy instinct about painting says, 'if you don't think about it, it's right.' As soon as you have to decide and choose, it's wrong. And the more you decide about, the more wrong it gets.
Andy WarholI think it would be great to make a $2 million or $3 million art movie where nobody would really have to go to it. I thought that would be a good project to work on . . . do something really artistic.
Andy WarholI've been invited to the White House about five times. I think the greatest thing would be if they actually invited everybody to the White House every night... they'd just take about 500 people a night. Everybody would just love this country because it's so thrilling to go there. It really is.
Andy WarholI thought that young people had more problems than old people...Then I looked around and saw that everybody who looked young had young problems and that everybody who looked old had old problems.
Andy WarholIf something's going to happen for you, it will, you can't make it happen. And it never does happen until you're past the point where you care whether it happens or not. I guess it's for our own good that it always happens that way, because after you stop wanting things is when having them won't make you go crazy.
Andy WarholYou have to do stuff that average people don't understand because those are the only good things.
Andy WarholWhen I got my first TV set, I stopped caring so much about having close relationships with other people.
Andy WarholMaybe the reason my memory is so bad is that I always do at least two things at once. It's easier to forget something you only half-did or quarter did.
Andy WarholI do the same thing everyday. I go to work and paint. I try to turn out as many pictures as I can.
