If our stressful thoughts aren't true, what does that leave? It leaves, "I am loveable" - the very thing I could never make myself believe, because "I'm unloveable" overrides it when the chips are down.
Byron KatieThe Work is four questions and a turnaround. The Work is a way to identify and question the thoughts that cause all the suffering and violence in the world. The Work is a very, very simple process. It's for anyone who can answer a question that is willing to. It takes a bit of willingness and an open mind.
Byron KatieThe person who finds peace inside and lives it, is the one who teaches what true peace is.
Byron KatieHere's what I would want for humanity, because this is what I have come to see is true: it's so simple when we listen to people.
Byron KatieI was full of rage. My self-esteem was so low that I actually slept on the floor every night, because I didn't believe I deserved a bed to sleep in.
Byron KatieYou donโt experience anxiety unless youโre attached to a thought that isnโt true for you. Itโs that simple.
Byron KatiePay close attention to the particular thoughts you use to deprive yourself of happiness.
Byron KatieBut when you think you're supposed to do something with it and imagine that you're the doer, that's pure delusion. Just follow your passion. Do what you love. Inquire, and have a happy life while you're doing it.
Byron KatieAs we watch the world embrace the Olympics in the coming days, let us remember why the modern Olympics came into being: to bring nations closer together, to have the youth of the world compete in sports, rather than fight in war. As long as we believe our own war-driven thoughts, there will always be war, in ourselves, in our families, and in our world. As long as we believe our thoughts, there will always be war.
Byron KatieFear is blind. There are some options in it, but they're very limited as compared to the options available to the fearless mind.
Byron KatieSometimes the concept you're questioning makes more sense to ask just the second one and not the first one.
Byron KatieWhen I was in my early forties, I slept with a loaded gun under my bed. Id become severely depressed in my thirties, and for almost a decade I spiraled down into paranoia, rage, self-loathing, and thoughts of suicide.
Byron KatieI'll tell you that for me, one when someone used to say something that was true, one way I knew it was true was that I immediately felt defensive. I blocked it off, and I went to war with them in my mind and suffered all that goes with it. And they were only saying what was true.
Byron KatieIf you want reality to be different than it is, you might as well try to teach a cat to bark.
Byron KatieWhen a thought appears such as "Do the dishes" and you don't do them, notice how an internal war breaks out... The stress and weariness you feel are really mental combat fatigue.
Byron KatieWe are never really in control. We just think we are when things happen to be going our way.
Byron KatieThe mind at war with itself does war with any other mind, and that produces war in the world - all of it.
Byron KatieIf I'm okay with dying, my son is at least as enlightened as that. If I'm okay with my cancer, my son is at least as enlightened as I am.
Byron KatieI can find only three kinds of business in the universe: mine, yours and God's. Much of our stress comes from mentally living out of our business. When I think, "You need to get a job, I want you to be happy, you should be on time, you need to take better care of yourself," I am in your business. When I'm worried about earthquakes, floods, war, or when I will die, I am in God's business. If I am mentally in your business or in God's business, the effect is separation.
Byron KatieI suffered from severe depression for over a decade. My condition deteriorated steadily. I was suicidal.
Byron KatieIt's not what happens in life that bothers us. It's what we're believing about it that bothers us.
Byron KatieIf our thinking is clear, how could work or money be the problem? Our thinking is all we need to change.
Byron KatieThe Work: 1. Is it true? 2. Can you absolutely know that itโs true? 3. How do you react, what happens, when you believe that thought? 4. Who would you be without the thought?
Byron KatieI can just talk about my world, and people relate to it because it's so familiar to them. It's them, it's not me. They're hearing themselves.
Byron KatieIf your beliefs are stressful and you question them, you come to see that they aren't true - whereas prior to questioning, you absolutely believe them. How can you live in joy when you're believing thoughts that bring on sadness, frustration, anger, alienation, and loneliness?
Byron KatieI am a lover of what is, not because I'm a spiritual person, but because it hurts when I argue with reality. We can know that reality is good just as it is, because when we argue with it, we experience tension and frustration. We don't feel natural or balanced. When we stop opposing reality, action becomes simple, fluid, kind, and fearless.
